Adaptive MTB Guidelines

Adaptive MTB guidelines and downloads

Break the Boundary has developed a set of Adaptive Mountain Bike Guidelines and resources for download and use by associate members, clubs, charities, departments and associations around Australia. The Guidelines address many challenges with adaptive MTB and provides solutions such as the Adaptive Trail Rating (ATR) system.

The resources on this page are available to help promote adaptive MTB, encourage participation in races and the community, assist event managers with integration, educate new people to the intricacies of the sport and provide some consistency throughout the country.

Guidelines are a suggestion only. By downloading and using any of the resources available, you agree to the terms of use and copyrights embedded within the electronic packages. A small fee for the downloads is appreciated to continue providing new and up to date resources.

2 – Adaptive Trail Rating Signs
Electronic Version 1.0.1 last updated 23/01/2018 (printable)

A set of signs that accompany the aMTB Guidelines have been developed for use on mountain-bike trail signposts. The signs are aimed at informing riders of the trail-accessibility level. Several forms of information are presented to give a detailed yet concise description of an audited trail.

Additional info

The signs are an adaption of popular 5-star rating systems, in particular common energy or safety rating systems seen around the world. The sign also illustrates the “adaptive cycling logo” (see next package), a descriptor and a numeric value of the star rating.

With a descriptive title and distinctive logo, other MTB riders can differentiate the information from other trail signs including those by the International Mountain Bicycling Association.

This signs may be used in combination with other standard trail signs in the given network of trails.

3 – Directional Adaptive MTB Signs
Electronic Version 1.0.1 last updated 23/01/2018 (non-printable)

These signs are designed to clearly mark a course route for adaptive MTB and handcyclists. They can be used for adaptive events or used in conjunction with regular MTB events where there is a different route or detour for aMTB. They should be used with the events standard hazard and information signs (example: speed warnings, traffic cautions and descent arrows).

Additional info

The symbol used is an adaption to common bike symbols and the International Symbol of Access. It utilities the same colour code for the background (as per AS 2700) and provides a clear contrast between the two colours (as per AS 1428.1). The handcycle symbol also represents a recumbent cycle as this is the more common and well known adaptive cycle for people with disabilities.
