Support riders
Thank you for your willingness to come and have a fabulous day our with our community and supporting your adaptive rider! As a support rider, there is no prerequisite to join the ride, though we do ask that you play your role in the day.
It is important to note that most adaptive bikes have e-assist, whilst you may not! It’s important to continue to communicate with your adaptive rider on the day, so everyone has fun!
What’s my role?
As a support rider, your role is to ensure the safety, enjoyment, and support of the adaptive rider throughout the entire ride. You will need to stay within 30 meters of the adaptive rider at all times and provide assistance as needed. Here’s what to keep in mind:
Pre-Ride Communication: Before the ride, make sure to discuss any specific needs or preferences with the adaptive rider, such as how they prefer assistance, challenges they might face on the trail, and how you can best support them. This can include physical help, verbal cues, or encouragement.
Ride Together: Stay within 30 meters of the adaptive rider for the duration of the ride. This ensures that you are close enough to assist if needed while also giving them enough space to enjoy the ride independently.
Be Observant: Adaptive mountain bikes often come with e-assist to help with terrain challenges, but as a support rider, you may not have the same advantage. Be mindful of your energy levels and be prepared for any sudden need for help. Keep an eye on the trail conditions, upcoming obstacles, and how your adaptive rider is handling the terrain.
Safety First: Always prioritise safety. If the adaptive rider requires assistance with braking, manoeuvring, or getting over tricky sections of the trail, be ready to step in. Discuss potential challenges beforehand so you’re both prepared for what might come up.
Encourage and Enjoy: Most importantly, you’re there to support the adaptive rider, so keep communication open and positive. You’re a team! Look out for each other and enjoy the adventure together.
Your role is crucial in making this a fun, safe, and inclusive ride.
