Adaptive Hiking

What’s Adaptive Hiking?

This program is the first and only of it’s kind in Australia. We have 2 adaptive hiking chariots (see pictures), and a team of adaptive hiking leaders that have completed extensive training, to be able to assist you on wonderful hikes in the stunning but challenging landscapes of the Perth Hills. We have the ability to take people to places they never thought would be accessible or possible!

We have audited 10 trails in the Perth Hills for you to come and explore. Once you have completed our Come and Try It Induction Day, you will be able to start enjoying these trails with us!

Who would this activity suit?

Lots of people!

People with mobility impairments

Participants with neurological conditions

Hikers with chronic pain conditions

Anyone with age-related limitations

People with vision impairment

You’re more than welcome to book yourself in for an induction session (see below), but if you would like to connect with us to see if this activity suitable for you, don’t hesitate to contact us: bookings@breaktheboundary.com.au

  • Chariots

Our Chariots are designed to take you on single track hikes, over logs, boulders and up and down steps. They have many adjustable features, and great suspension to make sure you’re comfortable. The chariots are suitable for people with upper and/or lower limb impairment, and also have a hoist onsite (max weight 130kg) for transfers into the chariot if required.

Our chariots are used in every hike and are operated by our team of adaptive hiking leaders.

  • Adaptive Hiking Leaders

Supported by a Department of Local Government, Sports and Communities WA Grant, Break the Boundary was able to extensively train 10 adaptive hiking leaders. We’re ready to assist you on wonderful hikes in the stunning but challenging landscapes of the Perth Hills. Our hiking leaders are friendly, adventurous and love hiking. They’re really looking forward to spending time out in the fresh air with you! Ditch your daily mobility aids, leave behind your impairments, sit back, relax and let your new friends take you on an adventure like you’ve never experienced before!

  • Hikes

Our volunteer adaptive hiking leaders will take you on hikes ranging from 1-2 hours, as fast or as slow as you desire. As you get familiar with our team and the equipment, we have the ability to progress to more challenging hikes and terrain. Family, friends, supporters are more than welcome to join us on the hikes, so we can enjoy nature all together.

Sometimes the best way is to see us in action!

Break the Boundary competed the 12km leg of the Mighty Jarrah Trail Run in Dwellingup, Western Australia, on the 10th September 2022. The adaptive trail running team, comprising of an adaptive participant, her mum and 8 hiking leaders, became the first team with a disability to complete an off-road trail running race in Australia. All hikers and support crew donated their time, energy and smiles to break another boundary. Mainstream events and trails are commonly known to be inclusive of people from all levels of experience, but forget that people with a disability and mobility impairments also deserve the same freedom to be included.
